The Importance of RPE Testing
When Respiratory Protective Equipment is used it must be able to provide adequate protection for the wearer.
It is futile using RPE if it cannot protect you and is leaking. A major cause of leaks is usually due to poor fitting.
As we know everyone is different and this includes our faces, we are all different shapes and sizes therefore, one mask doesn’t fit all. This is where fit testing comes in.
Fit testing ensures that the mask being worn is suitable and safe for each wearer and a competent person needs to be employed to complete the examination on the individual.
There are two types of tests that need to be completed, a qualitive and quantitative.
- Qualitive tests are only to be completed on half masks and take approximately 20 minutes to complete.
- Quantitative tests are completed on any type of mask and there are several different methods. The most common (Displayed Below) is when the mask is attached to a machine known as a Portacount and this detects whether airborne particles are passing through the seal of the mask. These tests also take around 20 minutes and the machine will indicate whether the mask has passed or failed.
Law states that these checks should be completed a minimum of every two years but Northern Insulation contractors UK Ltd we complete a face fit every 12 months on all operatives and supervisors and an in-house 6 monthly check.
Records are retained on file ready for inspection should the relevant governing body request to inspect.
