Domestic Projects

Asbestos was used extensively as a building material in the UK from the 1930′s through to the early 1990′s.

Garage Containing Asbestos

For this reason a large proportion homes in the U.K.’s will have asbestos containing materials somewhere in them. NIC specialise in helping home owners manage asbestos and a large proportion of our work is domestic asbestos removal and encapsulation.

There is no statutory duty upon homeowners to find out whether or not their homes include asbestos, but it would obviously be quite sensible to carry out a survey if you suspect its presence. If you are a landlord then you have a legal duty to ensure the safety of your tenants and you should certainly know what asbestos containing materials are present and what state they are in.

The HSE provide an excellent guide for homeowners to highlight where asbestos might be found in and around a home and this is an excellent resource to help you get started. If you do find asbestos and you feel it’s in a dangerous state then it’s important you act quickly both by isolating the affected area and contacting us to help you through the next steps. We would normally arrange for an asbestos survey to take place in your property so that we know the exact nature of the problem allowing us to provide expert advice. We will generally use a surveyor with specific experience in properties like your own so you can rest assured you’re getting the best possible service. Whatever the findings of the survey you can be sure that NIC will hold your hand every step of the way.

What’s Involved In Domestic Asbestos Removal?

During a domestic asbestos removal project, all surfaces and floors must be completely covered with plastic sheeting in order to catch any asbestos fibres that are released. The technicians working on the project will also need to wear protective gear, including disposable overalls, face masks, shoes and gloves.

The technicians will make sure that none of the ACM’s are broken apart during removal, so as to lessen the impact of anything that is removed. They will then carefully wrap the asbestos in special sheeting. Our asbestos technicians will then clean the area for you, leaving it absolutely spotless.

What Happens after Removal of the Asbestos from my property?

Once a domestic asbestos removal project has been completed and the ACM safely removed  and properly packaged by our technicians, disposal is arranged through your local authority.
